Western Algarve

The Algarve was, and to a certain extent, still is, one of Europe's sun blessed and empty surf paradises. There are more sunshine hours here than anywhere else in Portugal and even in January warm, sunny days are common. This is a bit of a catch 22 situation as the empty surf and excellent weather have turned some parts of the Algarve into soulless resorts pandering to package tourist hordes from across the continent. Thankfully this type of development is focussed largely in the Eastern Algarve and this is not where you will be staying. Surfing in the Western Algarve means sun, waves, easy access through Faro airport, beautiful Mediterranean scenery and the thrill of discovery as you bounce down a dusty track to a hidden pointbreak.

Sagres

The Ponta de Sagres is the most south-westerly point in Portugal and is a superb destination for both beginner and more experienced surfers. There are four excellent beaches in and around Sagres. Praia da Mareta is in the town and is a long, sweeping golden beach in the shadows of spectacular cliffs. The most popular places to surf are the undeveloped beaches of Praia do Beliche and Praia do Tonel which are a couple of minute´s drive outside the village. Its location and geography mean that this area enjoys some of Portugal´s mildest winter weather but has a refreshing breeze even in the height of the summer.

The town of Sagres is a small town with a laid back feel. Although it is popular with travelling surfers and has all the amenities holiday makers need, it has not succumbed to the ugliness associated with mass tourism. It is a chilled out town which has embraced tourism on a small scale and has retained its original charm. There is a good selection of reasonably priced bars and restaurants in the town centre. Surfing lessons can be arranged.
