ZOCO Destinations & Locations Worldwide

Portugal

Forget the hi-rise, concrete jungle of the Eastern Algarve and the faceless golf resorts, Zoco can help you discover a different side of this beautiful country. Portugal has a great selection of small fishing villages, deserted beaches and unspoilt natural parks which have helped to make it a popular all year round surf destination. It is these areas that Zoco have sought out an excellent selection of holiday accommodation at the best possible prices.

Portugalīs coastline is over 800kms in length and offers some of the finest surf in Europe. The recent expansion of budget airlines, such as Ryan Air and EasyJet, have made Portugal even more accessible for surfers from Northern Europe. As it is less than a 3 hour flight from the UK it is perfect for a quick get-a-way or a reasonably priced family holiday.

A hire car is essential for a surfing holiday in Portugal. If the break near your holiday home isnīt working, just hop in your car and youīll be sure to find a wave within a short drive.

Lisbon Area

Portugal's central coast streching from Ericeira to Peniche contains some of the finest surf spots on the planet. Supertubos and Coxos are legendary and world class waves that attract both local and travelling surfers, but these are by no means the only heaving sucky barrels to be had along this coast. Ericeira alone has at least five classic reef breaks and loads of lesser surfed breaks and mellow beachbreaks. In the winter months the beaches around Peniche are becoming very popular with kitesurfers looking for a winter fix.

Western Algarve

The Algarve was, and to a certain extent, still is, one of Europe's sun blessed and empty surf paradises. There are more sunshine hours here than anywhere else in Portugal and even in January warm, sunny days are common. This is a bit of a catch 22 situation as the empty surf and excellent weather have turned some parts of the Algarve into soulless resorts pandering to package tourist hordes from across the continent. Thankfully this type of development is focussed largely in the Eastern Algarve and this is not where you will be staying. Surfing in the Western Algarve means sun, waves, easy access through Faro airport, beautiful Mediterranean scenery and the thrill of discovery as you bounce down a dusty track to a hidden pointbreak.
